Task 1
Serial:
Series:
A
series is normally a story which is broken into a set number of
episodes, the number of episodes may include between 6-25 episodes, per
season. A season runs once every year and some popular family programme
series like 'Doctor Who', have been running since 1963. In a series, the
title and central characters stay the same. The audience become
familiar with the personality traits of the characters so the viewers
know what to expect from the them. However, each episode contains a
unique narrative which starts and concludes within that episode,
following the structural pattern of the Todorov theory; calm
equilibrium, disruptive disequilibrium (an event or situation that the
characters are confronted with), recognition, reparation and resolution
(a new situation). Some sub plots continue through out the series; these
may or may not conclude within that season and may actually continue
into the next.
Examples of popular series are:
'Merlin', which is broadcast on the Saturday prime time slot on the BBC1 channel. This 'Fantasy Drama' genre programme is currently on its fifth series and has 13 episodes per season.
