Lighting

We do not have any lighting systems or lights available at school that we can use for our drama. This was a consideration when we scouted for our locations.

This was not a problem because we needed a natural lighting look. All our locations had good lighting and our exterior shots used natural day light. We wanted a high key lighting look to help create our drama's realism.

The lighting in the changing room scene was not very bright.

Treatment

Treatment

Our targeted audience for this film is teenagers because they can relate to this situation. The audience can relate to this storyline, as the topics are common in there day-to-day lives. The teenage boys can relate to the football situation and rivalry in this single drama.
At the beginning of the film both boys are just talking and walking around. Both boys are very good friends leading up to the trial as they both get on well. They argue with each other just before the football trial occurs.
In the middle of the single drama friction occurs between both boys when they argue at a training session just before the trial as Anthony feels angry at one of gifts comments.  A climax occurs when gift is revealed to the audience as a nice guy and all he wanted to do was to win the contract and be close with his friends.
At the end of film Anthony feels really confident about the trial and feels that he is going to win it where else gift feels nervous and scared that he is not going to win the trial. The scout comes in to the changing room and gives the instructions in what is expected in the trial. He tells the boys what drill there are. Just before both buys go on to the actor turf Anthony says to gift that he is going to win. The scout decides to give the contract to gift, disheartening Anthony.  At the end Gift moves to Birmingham and both boys become friends and wish each other good wishes.
The first conflict is the training session and the second conflict is the football trial between the girl and 2 boys.  The Football trial is a conflict because the 2 boys are fighting for a football contract. The training session is a conflict as both boys have an argument there. The main theme of the story is the football trial. The topics used in the story are the hook because these topics relate to our audience therefore they would be interested in continuing to watch our single drama.
The moral of the story is that even your best friend can be turn in to your enemy.  The locations are the astro turf, which is going to be used in the single drama to film the football scenes. Another location will be that some of the production will be filmed in areas around school.

Synopsis

Our story line is about two competitive and exceptionally brilliant footballers (Gift and Anthony), who both play as a striker. The lads are so good that a professional scout from Aston Villa has gone on his way to watch them and offer one of the lads a professional contract.

At the start of our film, both boys are having a casual conversation with each other. The lads are good friends, but then the storm occurs during a training session in which the lads have an argument. They then start a feud, with both of them wanting to destroy each others career.

In the middle of our film the lads have had an argument due to the fact that (Anthony) is offended by a comment put across by (Gift). Gift did not mean do offend Anthony, but Anthony takes the joke to a different level.

At the end of our film Anthony feels confident that he has obtained the contract on the other hand Gift is very nervous, but in the end Gift is awarded the contact. In the end the boys resolve their feud and they wish each other a good future. Gift then moves to Birmingham to carry on with his career at Aston Villa Academy.

Evaluation

As a whole, I think our single camera production went terribly wrong, but personally I think we could have done much better. At the start of our production, it was obvious that everyone in our group had great interest in sport, so we quickly agreed on our ideas and we came up with a  storyline. As a group I think we worked exceptionally hard and we cooperated quiet well with each other. Our final production came out terribly, but I think we should  have improved on certain things such as the quality of our filming, the music, The use of effects and the right use of camera angles. I think the main issue that we faced in our group was the recording of our single camera production, because we were amateurs at single camera production, I think we underestimated the whole production as we thought we could breeze through the task, so I think this was our main down fall. First of all we should have used a various of effects to ensure our video was smooth, if we had used a various types of effects it would have made our production much more thrilling and entertaining, because the use of effects is very effective in production indeed. For our production I think we could also have used more than one track in our video such as having more energetic music to sync with our energetic sports scenes and then a smooth soundtrack to suit the smooth parts of our video, an energetic soundtrack could have boosted our production to a certain extent because music is fairy vital in production. We also faced problems with the right use of camera angles, because we were not specialist at handling a camera and we were not sure and did not have knowledge of all the best camera angles to use for the production we could not put them in and therefore making our video very unprofessional and boring. I can also recall a time when Miss Kaur had to remind us not to break the 180% rule because our knowledge of shot angles was clearly not there. If we were able to put all these things into our production then I am certain our video would have turned out brilliantly.

Unit 22 - Single Camera Production

Task 3

Compare and contrast

EastEnders is realist TV soap, which is based in the east end of London. The realist locations include: a pub, a club, a garage, a cafe, an Indian takeaway, a boxing club, a market, a square, an allotment and the characters houses. The characters feel stress, joy, betrayal, abuse and complex relationships, which the viewers can relate to. The stories deal with real life situations and have included issues such as homosexuality, drug abuse, racism and poverty. This may explain why ‘Eastenders’ is so popular as it is shown three times a week and has run for twenty years. EastEnders shows three or four different narrative per episode. It is both linear (sequential) and often open ended. It has a mix of restricted and unrestricted narrative. This keeps the audience guessing and excited about the next scenes keeping them glued to the soap.

In contrast, Doctor Who is anti-realist drama with a realistic element., which is based in parallel universes and on earth, this series will include a lot of aliens and monsters, such as the Daleks, Cyber men and many more. Directors use anti-realist characters to give the audience a feel of fantasy and imagination and takes them to a place full of adventures. Doctor who is also realistic is certain scene because its shows the real life dramas in “Rory and Amy’s” relationship, this mix of both realism and anti-realism gives the audience a feel of both worlds in a single series and creates an excitement in the audience’s views.

The equilibrium in 'Doctor Who' series 33, episode 1: Asylum of the Daleks, is when they all get kidnapped and then the recognition is when they speak to the main commander of the Daleks. 'Doctor Who' has 2 main storyline going on at the same time. The scene in which we see 'Oswin' view point is objective narrative because no one knows whats going on. 'Doctor Who' can also be classed as a subjective narrative because we see what the doctor sees. 'Doctor Who' is a non-linear program because it includes flash backs and its not sequential.

The differences between 'Doctor Who' and 'Eastenders' are that Doctor Who is based upon a fantasy therefore making it an anti-realist TV series. Eastenders on the other hand  is a realist program because it is based on real life events. 'Doctor Who' uses the Propps theory because the main  character is the 'Doctor' therefore making him the hero, in 'Doctor Who' the helpers are 'Amy and Rory', In this episode the villains are the 'Daleks', the dispatcher is the 'Daleks' leader and the damsel in distress is 'Oswin'. Eastenders uses Todorov's theory, where everything is calm at the start then comes the storm. 'Doctor Who' consists of 2 story lines going on at the same time and 'Eastenders' consists of 4V story lines going on at the same time. Doctor Who is non-linear because it contains flash backs and 'Eastenders' is linear because its structured.

Task 4

Period drama: A period drama is a fictional TV story, Period dramas often reflect the important history of the country in which the drama is set. Sherlock Holmes is a  fictional period drama based in London, its a drama about a detective who uses his forensic science skills to solve cases. This drama will be based in rural environment, this drama will not include urban building such as skyscrapers and towers. The language of this drama will be formal due to it being based in London in the 19th century.

Fantasy drama: Combines elements of fantasy fiction and the drama genre. This genre deals with  fictional characters such as 'Daleks', 'Cyber Men'  and many more. The story lines of fantasy dramas have always been centered around magic or unexplained circumstances. An example of a popular Fantasy drama:  'Merlin', which is broadcast on the Saturday prime time slot on the BBC1 channel. This 'Fantasy Drama' genre programme is based on the life of a young Merlin, discovering and then learning to master his magical gift.

Shameless is a real life drama, this show is broadcasted once a week. A drama is usually set in the same location with  the same characters every week, a drama is also based on a set number of series. A drama normally portrays how people live their lives, this show will include real life situation faced by the audience. A good example would be shameless, which is drama  which is located  in Stafford which in Manchester.  t

Crime-watch would come under the genre crime due to the fact that it displays police officers solving crimes and difficult situations. Crime programs commonly involve detectives and crime fighters. A brilliant example would be crime-watch as they show police officers fighting crime.

Unit 22 - Single Camera Production

Task 2

Single Camera production uses one camera during the filming of a scene, to get all the action. The shot angles and sizes can be changed by stopping the actors and moving the camera and starting the action again. A major benefit of using a single camera is that you don’t have to worry about other cameras being in shot.Using a single camera set-up allows the director to shoot out of sequence. For example in the comedy 'Citizen Khan' which has two locations, all of the mosque scene will be shot on one day and the interior house on another; the story might open in the house continual to the mosque go back to the house and end in the mosque. In a dialogue scene, the over the shoulder filming would not change camera position until the actor's lines are complete, the camera would then change position and film the other actor's lines. The shots will then be edited to appear as one continuous, fluent dialogue (continuity editing)

In a single camera production the director may choose to pan between subjects. The director can film longer takes or he can stop the camera and film from a new angle to get the shots he needs. When you film single-camera production, you're stuck with the footage you get. The first and probably most disadvantageous aspect of shooting with single-camera production is that you only get one angle at a time.

When directing single camera shows, the directors feel that by filming a single camera programme appeals more realistic and you touch a lot of the audience's hearts

Multi-camera productions are most often talk shows, sporting events and newscasts. Most multi-camera productions use 5 or more cameras that run simultaneously to catch the same action rather than having to run a scene over and over as is typical with most single camera shoots because if you are recording live you don't want scenes to be playing over and over gain. Additionally, they are extremely useful during live events because one camera can be focused on one individual or moment while the other cameras catch the reactions of other participants in that same scene or activity. multi-camera shots that are required are then selected then put together during the editing process.

With multi-camera production, you can get different angles and different takes at the same time, using different people operating different cameras. If one shot from the center looks bad, you can always replace those frames with a shot from the right or left to easily and quickly cover things up. On multiple camera production you have more freedom on how the camera moves - freedom in shooting on location in smaller rooms, etc. - if you're shooting each angle separately you have more freedom to control everything for each shot like lighting.

Unit 22 - Single Camera Production

Task 1

Series:
A series is normally a story which is broken into a set number of episodes, the number of episodes may include between 6-25 episodes, per season. A season runs once every year and some popular family programme series like 'Doctor Who', have been running since 1963. In a series, the title and central characters stay the same. The audience become familiar with the personality traits of the characters so the viewers know what to expect from the them. However, each episode contains a unique narrative which starts and concludes within that episode, following the structural pattern of the Todorov theory; calm equilibrium, disruptive disequilibrium (an event or situation that the characters are confronted with), recognition, reparation and resolution (a new situation). Some sub plots continue through out the series; these may or may not conclude within that season and may actually continue into the next.

Examples of popular series are:
'Merlin', which is broadcast on the Saturday prime time slot on the BBC1 channel. This 'Fantasy Drama' genre programme is currently on its fifth series and has 13 episodes per season.

merlin.jpegΩ

'Misfits' is broadcasted on E4. This British science fiction comedy drama is based on modern day teenagers with super powers. It is currently on its fourth series, airing between 6 - 8 episodes per season.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ud8AJDaAW7c

'CSI' is an American crime drama television series. This series is broadcast on Britain's Channel 5 and the narrative follows the investigations by a 'super cool' team of talented individuals. The series popularity is apparent as it is currently on it's 13th series, airing between 17 - 24 episodes per season.

Serial:
A serial format is typically a serialization of a book or event that took place and is only broadcasted once on television. It mainly reflects 'real life' and has between one and four episodes. Serials adapt the narratives and may feature 'cliff hangers' which 'hook' the viewer to continue watching.

Examples of popular Serials are:
'Top Boy' was broadcasted on Channel 4. This drama serial was based  on teenage violence in London. It had four episodes which were broadcast over four consecutive nights.
Another example is 'My Murder' broadcasted on Channel 4. A gripping factual drama. My Murder tells the true story of Shakilus Townsend, a boy who was led to his death by who he thought of as his girlfriend. Another example of a serial is 'Killing Osama Bin laden' Broadcasted on Discovery Channel. This gripping documentary was based on the life of an international terrorist.

Single Drama:
A single drama is normally filmed once and it reflects real life and it would never be shown again. single dramas are now quiet rare because they are not broadcasted that many times on television. Single dramas are mostly based on topical issues, these things are most likely to be shown on television rather than a cinema.

Examples of popular Single Dramas are:
'Fallout' a Channel 4 crime drama. This drama surrounded the lives of a group of teenagers, following the fatal stabbing of a mutual associate, Kwame (Lanre Malaolu) in South London. Another example would be 'The No1 Ladies Detective Agency' a BBC1 comedy drama. Based  on the story of a detective agency opened in Botswana.
